Q & A RE: VOTER REGISTRATION FORMS WHILE CANVASSING WITH REFERENDUM PETITIONS

To assure that new voter registration forms are recorded by the board of elections before, or simultaneously with, the referendum petition signature of the newly registered voter, it is best that voter registration forms be held by the sales tax petitioning canvasser and paper clipped to the sales tax petition form the newly resisted voter signed. This will prevent the sales tax referendum signatures from being rejected in case the board of elections reviews the sales tax signatures before the BOE records the new voter registrations.

To clarify, when we went to the BOE two weeks ago, they requested that the registration forms be given to them simultaneous with the petitions along with an orange form, filled out by us. Otherwise, they said, the registration forms might not be entered before the petitions were checked, and the new voters' signatures would not be counted. Since the petitions have to go to the County Auditor for 10 days prior to the BOE, I think we can hand in our voter registration forms to the BOE prior to the actual petition, as long as the BOE knows these registration forms are part of the petitioning process and should be entered prior to qualifying petition signatures.

What we were told and asked to do is to gather the registration forms and submit them together with the stack of 46,000 signatures.

If people want to send the voter registration forms in to the BOE, they can do this, but risk the BOE not entering the registration prior to qualifying the signatures on the petition. We used to send them in as we gathered them, but apparently they don't want us doing that now.

I hope this answers your questions; you can call the BOE yourself and ask more questions. We would be happy to hear any other qualifying statements they make on the subject.

Thanks,

David Ellison

UNPAID PETITION CANVASSER DOES NOT NEED TO SIGN VOTER REGISTRATION FORM see below
To all:
We called John at the Board of Elections in the registration department today, July 31, and only people who are being paid need to fill out section 15 of the Voter Registration Form.

Yours truly,
